Let’s talk about migration | Oiza Q. Obasuyi

Oiza Q. Obasuyi, a sociology PhD student at the University of Bologna, highlights why migration must be studied through a gendered and intersectional lens. Public discourse often imagines migrants as male, overlooking the specific vulnerabilities faced by women, who navigate both dangerous journeys and the discriminatory structures of European migration policies. In Italy, strict security laws criminalize undocumented people, placing migrant women in extreme precarity. Many work in the care and cleaning sectors, where employers may exploit their legal status, making them afraid to report violence or abuse.

Obasuyi argues that feminism today faces major challenges: the rise of far-right politics, the persistence of white liberal feminism that excludes marginalized women, and global issues such as climate change and ongoing colonial dynamics, which disproportionately affect women in the Global South. She believes these same challenges will remain central in the next decade. Her key feminist references include Angela Davis, bell hooks, and Wangari Maathai.
