Beyond the Reflection, by Caterina Facchini

The short film interweaves the testimony of a woman who defied the constraints of her time by leaving Sicily to assert her independence, with a visual narrative that transforms the act of painting into a gesture of liberation.
Two figures meet in a silent dialogue, composed of glances and gestures. Through painting, the protagonists confront the weight of social expectations. The image of a crouching man — crushed by the pressure of a society that imposes a mask of invulnerability upon him — dissolves at the crucial moment: the tearing of the canvas. It is not an act of destruction, but a declaration of independence: in the final shot, her hand reaches through the tear and reaches out towards him to guide him beyond the boundary. Together, they overcome the ‘wound’ to enter a new reality, where prejudices and stereotypes give way to equality and mutual support. The resulting painting remains as a tangible legacy of this act of breaking free and sharing.
