Here you can watch the recording of the keynote lecture<\/strong> delivered by Dolores Morondo Taramundi<\/strong>, Professor of Legal Philosophy and member of the Institute of Human Rights at Deusto University, whose work focuses on gender equality, anti-discrimination law, and feminist legal theory.
In this lecture, Morondo Taramundi analysed how gender equality is addressed within European Union policies<\/strong>, highlighting both the progress achieved and the structural challenges that continue to limit effective implementation. She examined gender equality not only as a formal legal principle of the EU, but as a complex policy objective<\/strong> that requires constant political commitment, institutional coordination, and critical reflection.
The presentation explored key tensions between law and policy<\/strong>, showing how gender equality strategies often risk becoming technocratic, fragmented, or diluted when translated into practice. Particular attention was given to gender mainstreaming, equality strategies, and anti-discrimination frameworks, as well as to the gaps that persist between EU-level commitments and their concrete impact at national and local levels.
Morondo Taramundi also reflected on contemporary challenges facing EU gender equality policies, including intersecting forms of discrimination, resistance to feminist agendas, and the instrumentalisation of equality language without structural change. She stressed the importance of intersectional approaches<\/strong>, robust accountability mechanisms, and the inclusion of feminist knowledge in policymaking processes.
Concluding, the lecture offered strategic reflections on how EU gender equality policies can be strengthened\u2014through clearer legal obligations, stronger monitoring tools, and a renewed political vision that treats gender equality as a core democratic value<\/strong>, rather than a marginal or optional policy area.
